Fast Facts

• All Music minors receive a guaranteed scholarship for two years and, if you continue to enroll in an ensemble, for all four years.
• Music minors receive a guaranteed 30-minute weekly private lesson for two years (four semesters) with one of our expert faculty.
• You'll take four semesters of an ensemble. Choose from concert choir, wind ensemble, civic orchestra, or jazz ensemble, or you can take a small ensemble such as brass ensemble, clarinet choir, chamber choir, string chamber ensemble, or flute choir.

Course Requirements

The music minor involves 19 credits.

• MUS 140/240: Large Ensemble (Four semesters, one credit each)
• MUS 1##/2##: Lessons on Instrument/Voice/Composition (Four semesters, one credit, 30-minute lessons per week)
• MUS 101/102: Theory I and II (Two semesters, three credits each)
• MUS 109/113: Theory and Aural Lab I and II (Two semesters, zero credits each)
• MUS 111/112: Aural Skills I and II (Two semesters, one credit each)

One Music History course (Three credits) chosen from the following:

• MUS 104: Music History I (Antiquity to 1750); Fall semester only
• MUS 105: Music History II (1750 to the present); Spring semester only
• MUS 114: Music and Media; Fall and spring semesters
• MUS 206: Orchestral/Chamber Music Lit.; Spring semester, alternating years
• MUS 207: World Music/Jazz History; Fall semester only

Auditions, Scholarships, and Ensembles

Students are accepted as music minors through the same audition process as music majors and are awarded a scholarship for their participation in the music department’s large ensembles, which are concert choir, civic orchestra, wind ensemble, or jazz ensemble. Minors are also welcome to participate in the department’s small ensembles at the discretion of the ensemble’s director. Small ensembles are clarinet choir, saxophone ensemble, flute ensemble, brass ensemble, piano ensemble, chamber choir, string chamber ensemble, and Opera Workshop.Ìý
